Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn, NYDescription
For Our Neighbors is a welcome space for synanthropic birds – that is, bird species that often live among and rely upon structures associated with human habitation. Aiming to draw attention to some of the birds that co-exist with us as neighbors, the bird house is conceived of as analogous to a roof system, enhanced with vertical and covered platform surfaces for Barn Swallow nest-building, or to serve as nesting sites for House Finches, Mourning Doves, and other birds that utilize ledges. Exaggerated rain gutters can potentially be habitation sites for Carolina Wrens, who make homes using drainpipes and even abandoned pots. Cedar shingles line the undulating roof structure, occasionally revealing gaps for birds to enter between shingles.
