2006, Stockholm Public Library Competition (With assistance from Stephanie Vito)
This proposal for an extension to the Stockholm Public Library (by G. Asplund) intensifies the site’s unique environmental conditions. Situated at 59 degrees north latitude and 18 degrees east longitude, Stockholm is a location which offers dynamic seasonal changes and an extreme daylighting calendar, with long summer days and long winter nights. The library extension design reflects some of these dynamic exterior conditions into the building’s interior. By implementing a system of reflective surfaces, angled at varying degrees to capture the ever-changing lighting and colors from Observatory Hill, the project’s interior horizontal surfaces produce a myriad of optical effects that suggest visual continuity between inside and outside.
